Bibles & Basketball

Megan Campbell De Thaey | Married to Thomas De Thaey, Overseas Player
We recently had the opportunity to speak with Megan De Thaey, founder of Bibles & Basketball. Although Megan and her husband are not currently affiliated with the NBA, we still wanted to share this highlight because we absolutely LOVE what she is doing! Megan has created a unique space for us, as women associated with professional basketball, to unite through a love of God and the commonality of basketball. Continue reading and see why we praise what she is doing!
1. What is Bibles and Basketball?
Bibles & Basketball is a non-profit, Christian community of professional basketball players’ and coaches’ wives, fiances, and girlfriends eager to know more of God and excited to share that passion with everyone they come in contact with. The world of professional sports can be hectic, unpredictable, and lonely – so, our hope and prayer is that this community is able to provide hope and love of Christ in the midst of this frenzied lifestyle. We guide women into a deeper relationship with Christ and offer tools and resources for members to do the same in their own communities.
2. What inspired you to start Bibles and Basketball?
In 2014, I was a newlywed in a foreign country with entirely too much time on my hands and a husband who was almost always on the road – preseason camps and games all over Europe kept my husband’s bags packed by the door. I’m sure other WAGS can relate!
I was lonely. I deeply desired purpose in the unfamiliar roles of expat and housewife. More importantly, I had a profound hunger to know more about Jesus. There were many tears cried and many prayers prayed through the first few weeks of my new life as an overseas basketball wife.
All of a sudden, God began to answer my prayers, dry my tears, and force me to face fears I had been running from and avoiding.
That’s when He placed an idea in my heart to create a group tailored for other ladies, in the same position, craving community and Jesus.
I would love to say I fully embraced this idea, but the truth is I ran as far as I could, in the opposite direction, completely avoiding the idea God had purposely placed in my heart; I doubted that God was calling me to execute this idea, so I made excuses how this calling was not meant for me.
Despite the devil trying to rouse up self-doubt, God’s voice was far more powerful, an He continued to stir this new idea in my heart and mind. The thought became a desire and now, my purpose!
The initial group started as a few women participating on a video chat, diving into the Word, hoping for God to make us more like Him. Two and a half years later, Bibles and Basketball became an official 501(c)3 nonprofit and now we have almost 400 members in more than 40 countries around the world with weekly meetings, prayer and support groups, and a strong, pure, beautiful sisterhood only God could create.
3. What challenges, if any, do you face when it comes to balancing your family, your household, your relationship and Bibles and Basketball?
If I’m not careful, it can become a juggling act trying to do it all. It can easily turn into my day running me instead of me running my day, which is not productive at all. I might get today’s list done, but not done well and only enough to make it to the next day. You know, that gasping for air between the waves feeling.
Routines and rhythms have become key to thriving with a crazy to do list. Our morning routine is my favorite. Each and every day starts with the same first hour - make the bed, start the coffee, eat breakfast, and enjoy our coffee while we have our time studying the Bible, then review what I have going on for the day, identifying my top three priorities from my to do list. We don’t sleep with our phones in our bedroom, so we’re not reaching for the pulls of society first thing in the morning. Starting slow and quiet helps me to stay focused on why I’m doing this in the first place: to bring the peace of Christ to a crazy and hectic lifestyle through an incredible community of women.
4. Has your husband’s career impacted Bibles and Basketball?
Absolutely! We wouldn’t be here with Bibles&Basketball without having gone through difficult seasons to know we needed a community. The difficult seasons we’ve gone through - and, gracious, I have some stories for you - are testimonies we openly share with other basketball families in hopes of encouraging them through the stormy seasons. What I love about Bibles&Basketball is how encouraging our ladies are. When someone posts a prayer request, they are quick to rally around with encouragement and their own “I’ve been there” moments.
We also wouldn’t have the opportunity to meet such incredible people without the career he’s had overseas. Each season brings new friends and many turn into family.
